### Cuando /ɑ/ y /ɔ/ se convierten en una sola vocal

Buena parte de los hablantes de inglés americano ya no distingue /ɑ/ de /ɔ/: para ellos _cot_ y _caught_ suenan exactamente igual. Otros mantienen las dos separadas. Ninguna de las dos formas está mal — lo que importa es reconocer las dos al escuchar.

**Cómo se produce**

- 👄 **Boca:** en el acento fusionado, una sola posición abierta para las dos palabras.
- 👅 **Lengua:** atrás y baja, sin cambiar entre _cot_ y _caught_.
- 🔊 **Voz:** en el acento no fusionado, la diferencia está en redondear o no los labios.

### When /ɑ/ and /ɔ/ collapse into a single vowel

A large share of American English speakers no longer distinguish /ɑ/ from /ɔ/: for them _cot_ and _caught_ sound exactly alike. Others keep the two apart. Neither is wrong — what matters is recognizing both when you listen.

**How it's made**

- 👄 **Mouth:** in a merged accent, one single open position serves both words.
- 👅 **Tongue:** back and low, unchanged between _cot_ and _caught_.
- 🔊 **Voice:** in an unmerged accent, the difference is whether the lips round.

> ⚠️ **The typical Spanish-speaker mistake:** assuming there's one correct pronunciation, and freezing when a native speaker merges the two sounds.
